SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is skilled work involving responsibility for the efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of automotive repair tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade as well as the occasional operation of a school bus.  The work is performed under general supervision or direction depending upon the organization structure. Considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment. Supervision may be exercised over Mechanic Helpers and other skilled or unskilled laborers as the occasion warrants. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers and power shovels;
  • Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers;
  • Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles;
  • Adjust connecting rods and bearings;
  • Adjust steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment;
  • Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters;
  • Tunes engine and sets the timing;
  • Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
  • May operate motor equipment or school buses when directed or as a regular assignment.
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; familiarity with welding techniques; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and high and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of experience as a skilled automotive repairperson.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position.
  2. Possession of appropriate license endorsements, including Air Brake, Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) endorsements, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, may be required by school district within one (1) year of appointment unless obtained prior to appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:

In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.
