ROAD MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II (RMEO II)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of road maintenance equipment. Greater skill is required than in the operation of other types of automotive equipment due to the size and complex nature of the equipment. Supervision may be exercised over the activities of laborers. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Operates a motor vehicle in connection with the transportation of various materials (blacktop, salt, sand, gravel) and equipment;
  • Operates a motor vehicle with snow plow, sander and other attachments in removal of snow and ice;
  • Operates loaders, rollers, and tractors;
  • Operates motorized mowing equipment;
  • Patches, resurfaces, repairs and grades gravel and asphalt roads;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs road drainage systems including ditches, basins, culverts, sewers and catch basins;
  • Digs and refills trenches for sewers and drainage;
  • Installs and maintains traffic signs and markings;
  • Removes snow from roads and sidewalks and sands icy pavements;
  • Clears dead trees, brush, cuts grass, plants trees, cuts wood, relative to clearing Town right-of-way;
  • Performs manual labor, such as loading trucks, digging ditches, and cleaning culverts;
  • Performs a variety of simple manual tasks such as cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, and road maintenance work;
  • Cuts grass, rakes leaves, trims shrubs and trees, spades flower beds and assists in other grounds maintenance activities;
  • Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Thorough knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment used in road maintenance work; good knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to operate road maintenance equipment; ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work outside under adverse weather conditions; dependability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years of experience operating road maintenance equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, is required at the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position.

NOTE: Candidates for appointment are required to participate in and pass a pre-duty drug screening.

NOTE: Candidates for appointment must consent to the running of a full query of the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
