LEAD AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is skilled work involving responsibility for the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment for a municipality, including heavy-duty equipment such as transportation, construction, snow, and/or road maintenance equipment. Primary duties are leading and participating in the repair and maintenance of the above equipment along with Automotive Mechanics and Automotive Mechanic Helpers. Additional responsibilities involve inspecting finished repair work and road-tests of vehicles, when appropriate, ordering and billing of parts used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, and inspecting the garage area to ensure security and safety. Work is performed under general supervision of higher-level mechanics and/or administrators. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Leads and participates in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, automobiles, buses, snow equipment, tractors, graders, backhoes and mowers;
  • Leads and participates in repairs or replacement of water pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, fuel injectors and shock absorbers;
  • Leads and participates in the assembly and timing of engines;
  • Leads and participates in vehicle maintenance activities such as checking fluid levels, changing oil, lubricating vehicles;
  • Leads and participates in the repair and maintenance of auxiliary equipment on trucks, graders and rollers;
  • Leads and participates in the mounting and detaching of snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
  • Leads and participates in the repair and overhaul of emission systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and axles;
  • Leads and participates in vehicle repair activities such as adjusting connecting rods and bearings, straightening frames and fenders, adjusting steering mechanisms, aligning wheels, etc.;
  • Maintains inventory of repair order records on vehicles maintained and billing records of repaired vehicles;
  • May operate electric or acetylene welding or cutting equipment;
  • May operate snow equipment as needed;
  • May operate a school bus as needed when appointed in a school district;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; working knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships; initiative; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:         

Three (3) years of full-time skilled automotive mechanic experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position.

WHEN APPOINTED BY THE PUTNAM COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS & FACILITIES:

  1. ASE Master Technician certification in automotive repair;
  2. ASE Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicles;
  3. New York State Motor Vehicle Inspector Groups 1 and 2
  4. Candidates for appointment are required to participate in and pass a pre-duty drug screening.
  5. Candidates for appointment must consent to the running of a full query of the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

WHEN APPOINTED IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT

When appointed in a school district, possession of appropriate license endorsements, including Air Brake, Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) endorsements, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, may be required by the individual school district within one (1) year of appointment, unless obtained prior to appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:

In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.
