MAINTENANCE PAINTER I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is skilled work involving the responsibility for the efficient performance of a variety of painting tasks and related maintenance jobs requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, permitting considerable leeway in planning the details of each assignment. General supervision may be exercised over laborers or other helpers. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Applies paint, lacquer, rustproof oil or other coating onto walls, floors, ceilings, metal, woodstock or fabricated items using brush, roller or other application devices;
  • Cleans floors using hand scraper, wire brush, sandpaper or turpentine;
  • Places small workpieces on bench, stanchion or floor;
  • Cleans brushes, rollers or other application devices and surrounding surfaces such as the floor, etc., using solvent or soap and water;
  • May transfer items to and from work area using hoist, hand truck or other mechanism;
  • Cleans areas to be painted using solvent soaked cloth or other cleaner;
  • May perform maintenance tasks including but not limited to repairing doors, windows, glass, chairs, tables, lights, ballasts, switches, plugs, lamps, fixtures, water closets, drinking fountains, shower controls, and sinks, as well as assist with snow removal;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate common painting equipment; ability to rig and work from scaffolds; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One (1) year of experience as a skilled painter.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Access to transportation may be required to complete possible field work assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
