DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled mechanical work involving the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of complex motor driven construction equipment. Employees in this class are usually responsible for the maintenance of their equipment. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision is exercised over motor equipment operators and laborers. Performs related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex construction equipment; good knowledge of the safety precautions in the operation of construction equipment; ability to supervise others; ability to manage a construction and/or road crew, ability to make independent decisions, ability to service and make minor repairs to construction equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude; dependability, leadership, good judgment.
Five (5) years of experience in the operation of automotive equipment, three (3) years of which shall have been in the operation of complex construction equipment.
Possession of a valid New York State Class “B” or higher Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated.
