DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled, journeyman level automotive body repair work, involving responsibility for repair of damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers and graders. Responsibilities also include ensuring mechanical efficiency and safety of automotive equipment by repairing and overhauling vehicles when needed, in addition to performing repair work which may require welding. This position differs from Automotive Mechanic due to additional duties of automotive body repair requiring skilled welding. Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level mechanic or supervisor, with considerable leeway allowed for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Automotive Mechanic Helpers. Performs related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of automotive repair practices, methods, tools and terminology; good knowledge of the machinist trade and welding techniques; good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment and safety precautions used in the painting of automotive and construction motor equipment, ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to work from plans, rough drafts and specifications; ability to lay out and supervise the work of others; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.
Two (2) years of satisfactory journeyman experience in automotive mechanic/automotive body repair which involved welding.
Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle license, Class B with Hazmat Endorsement within six (6) months of appointment.
