VILLAGE MAYOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This class functions as the executive head and chief of government of a village. An incumbent is elected to this office in the manner prescribed by New York State law. Responsibilities include organizing, developing, and directing village governmental operations consistent with the provisions of all applicable laws, local laws, rules and regulations. Administrative supervision is exercised over all village employees and personnel. Extensive contacts required with key elected, managerial, and professional personnel of the federal, state, and local levels as well as other interested personnel from both public and private sectors. Responsibilities also include providing for enforcement of all applicable laws, rules and regulations, and causing all violations thereof to be prosecuted, as well as appointment of officers including a Deputy Village Mayor to act for and in the place of the Village Mayor if and when necessary. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only)

  • Presides at meetings of the board of trustees, with one vote;
  • Exercises supervision over conduct of the police and other subordinate officers of the village;
  • Intervenes in any and all actions, at the direction of the board of trustees, where deemed necessary to protect the rights of the village and its inhabitants;
  • Executes all contracts in the name of the village;
  • Signs orders to pay claims with the village clerk or deputy village clerk when authorized by the board of trustees;
  • Signs checks in the absence or inability of the treasurer or   deputy treasurer, if any, when authorized by the board of trustees by resolution or local law;
  • Issue all licenses and for such purpose shall be the "licensing officer" unless another village officer is so designated;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS This is an elected position for a term of four (4) years.
