DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is routine but important work involving responsibility during a shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of water and sewage treatment plants. Work is performed under general supervision of a chief operator qualified to be in charge of the operation of the plant. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees in the performance of their assigned duties. Performs related work as required.


  • Operates pumps, valves, motors, and related machinery and equipment;
  • Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;
  • Records readings of meters, gauges and scales;
  • Regulates and adjusts chlorine;
  • Cleans filtration equipment and settling basins, if existing;
  • Takes samples of water and wastewater for testing;
  • Makes necessary tests for control of plant operation;
  • Starts and stops pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment;
  • Treats and disposes of sludge;
  • Operates trickling filters;
  • Assists in the instruction of trainees;
  • Keeps a log of plant operations and related records;
  • Performs custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds;
  • May utilize a computerized SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system to monitor and operate plants, booster stations, storage and distribution facilities;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a Type A Plant with facilities and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant; working knowledge of the principles and application of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification and wastewater treatment; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales, and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability.


Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and one (1) year of experience in the actual operation of a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration with pretreatment or for chemical softening or any similar process; and; one (1) year of experience in the actual operation of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 31 or greater, and facilities of the appropriate type.


At time of permanent appointment individual must be in possession of a current:

  • Grade II­A certificate issued under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code; and
  • Grade 2A certification issued under the provisions of The Department of Environmental Conservation rules
