DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled position involving the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of complex equipment used in the removal, pruning and care of trees. Employees in this class are responsible for maintenance of their equipment. Work is performed under general supervision of the Crew Chief with leeway permitted in planning the details for each work assignment. Supervision is exercised over the work of laborers and helpers. This position differs from Tree Maintenance Equipment Operator in the higher level of experience and independent judgment required. Performs related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices, tools, equipment and safety precautions used in topping, pruning and the removal of trees; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; ability to maintain simple records; dependability; willingness to respond to emergencies.
Six (6) years of experience in tree work including the use of spurs and ropes in the climbing of trees, with one (1) year of experience in the operation of an articulating‑boom aerial device (bucket truck).
