PLUMBER HELPER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Work involves assisting in a wide variety of plumbing work. Work includes assisting higher-level plumbers in the installation, repair and replacement of pipes and fittings as well as the use of tools such as pipe cutters, cutting torches, pipe threading machines, and a variety of other power tools. Work is performed under general supervision of the Commissioner of Highways and Facilities and direct supervision of Maintenance Plumber and Master Plumber. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only)

  • Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes;
  • Repairs and replaces pipes, valves and fittings for high and low pressure steam, gas and liquid flow systems;
  • Assists in inspecting structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structures resulting from installation of pipes;
  • Installs and repairs washstands, toilets, showers, drains, sinks, and other equipment requiring plumbing and steam connections;
  • Locates and marks positions of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level and plumbbob;
  • Repairs and replaces parts for pumps and associated pumping equipment;
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of metals and nonmetals using hand tools and power tools;
  • Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints;
  • Tests and tightens joints;
  • May cut, thread, bend and fit pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe threading machine;
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of heating, water and drainage systems;
  • Taps liquid and gas mains for connections, as required;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade; working knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; familiarity with the applicable provisions of the state codes and such local codes as apply to the trade; ability to carry out the various specialized plumbing techniques; ability to work with a variety of piping systems including high and low pressure steam, water, gas, etc.; ability to read blueprints and rough sketches; ability to coordinate work with the work of other trades; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; resourcefulness in work performance; initiative in successfully completing assigned work; dependability; willingness to learn.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either

  1. Two (2) years of full-time experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice plumber; or
  2. Completion of a two (2) year course in a technical institute in a field or fields related to plumbing
