MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is skilled work involving responsibility for the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment including heavy duty equipment such as bulldozers and graders. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed permitting considerable leeway in planning the details of each assignment. Incumbents of this class are also required to operate road maintenance equipment. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs skilled operations in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel motor equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders, backhoes and mowers;
  • Repairs or replaces water pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors and shock absorbers;
  • Assembles and times engines;
  • Repairs or overhauls ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and axles;
  • Adjusts valves, connecting rods, bearings, steering mechanisms;
  • Straightens frames and fenders, and aligns wheels;
  • Repairs and maintains auxiliary equipment on trucks, graders and rollers;
  • Mounts and detaches snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
  • Operates road maintenance equipment to assist with snow plowing and removal, emergency tree removal, etc.;
  • Performs labor such as loading, driving, snow removal, as necessary;
  • May operate electric or acetylene welding and cutting equipment;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive  and other mechanical equipment; working knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years experience as a skilled automotive mechanic.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: 

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Drivers License appropriate to the type and size of equipment being operated.
