FARM ASSISTANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves the care and management of an active farm.  Duties and responsibilities may vary according to season and weather conditions. Essential duties include the care and management of livestock and horses, planting and harvest of plant life, and the maintenance and upkeep of faming equipment and buildings. Significant contact with visitors, volunteers, and work groups, including the general public is involved. Direct Supervision is provided by the Parks Superintendent and Supervising Crew Chief with substantial independent judgment on the part of the incumbent. Supervision of volunteers, community service workers, and student interns is a part of this position. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Cleans and upkeeps sheds, pastures, water troughs and equipment;
  • Maintains and cleans stables;
  • Participates in grooming, nail and hoof trimming, etc. of livestock and horses;
  • Feeds and waters animals in accordance with species, health and activity level;
  • Turns out and retrieves animals from pasture;
  • Checks animals for evidence of disease or injury, and provides treatment per veterinarian instructions;
  • Maintains medical logs;
  • Schedules appointment with animal grooming specialists and assists as needed;
  • Orders feed, hay and other equipment as needed;
  • Operation of farming equipment as needed;
  • Notifies supervisor of necessary repairs to farm and performs same repairs as required and/or directed;
  • Opens and maintains greenhouse;
  • Maintains plants including weeding beds, starting seedings, transplanting and harvest of plants;
  • Interacts with vendors including billing, file maintenance and receiving of goods;
  • Maintains financial records for Tilly Foster Farm;
  • Trains new employees;
  • Schedules and trains ATI work groups;
  • Participates with and trains PILOT students;
  • Coordinates with volunteers;
  • Sets up work schedules;
  • Collects time sheets;
  • Landscapes and organizes seasonal decorations for Tilly’s Table;
  • Significant interaction with the public, provides information about farm, livestock and horses in a friendly and helpful manner;
  • May occasionally work late for vet appointments or animal emergencies;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Good knowledge of the care and management of farm animals; good knowledge or gardening; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of farm equipment; working knowledge of farm animal health issues; ability to comfortably handle animals; ability to safely operate farm equipment; ability to handle the physical demands of farm work including walking, standing, reaching, bending, squatting, lifting, and carrying; ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to generate and maintain records; resourcefulness and imagination in meeting new and unusual problems; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; manual and physical dexterity; good judgment; initiative and resourcefulness; tact and courtesy; integrity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years’ experience in farm operations, specifically in the daily care of farm animals.

PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
