DEPUTY SHERIFF SERGEANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Work involves responsibility for assigning, inspecting and scheduling the work of Deputy Sheriffs on an assigned shift or within a unit, actively supervising performance and work duties of all Deputies as assigned. Additional duties and assignments, including extensive administrative responsibilities, may also be assigned. Work is performed in accordance with established laws, rules, regulations and procedures, under direct supervision of the Road Patrol Captain and general supervision of the Undersheriff. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Supervises the activities of deputy sheriffs;
  • Assigns deputies to specific areas of patrol or investigation;
  • Receives complaints from public concerning crimes and emergencies;
  • Ensures that warrants assigned to Deputy Sheriffs are being followed up properly and kept active with courts;
  • Coordinates the transfer of prisoners between various locations;
  • Files and/or oversees filing of proper charges in connection with arrests and pending arrests;
  • Ensures that information from prior shift is relayed to oncoming shift;
  • Prepares and reviews a variety of records and reports associated with law enforcement work, which may involve the use of personal and/or laptop computers;
  • Answers questions for, directs and assists the public;
  • Manages supervision, distribution and maintenance of departmental equipment;
  • Investigates personnel complaints;
  • Ensures that all sub-stations are kept neat and orderly;
  • May investigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons;
  • May perform specialized communications functions when assigned to the communications center;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

When Assigned to Administrative Sergeant duties may also:

  • Research grant opportunities and prepare grant applications, including writing, research, and application processes, as well as implement approved grants funding distribution;
  • Monitor department law enforcement divisions to ensure compliance with the department’s accreditation program, including preparing the department for scheduled inspections by New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Program;
  • Gather and disseminate all current police intelligence and information (including but not limited to significant patrol calls, criminal activities, officer safety issues, departmental directives/orders, etc.), by preparing and distributing daily debriefing flyers and email messages to email distribution list, as well as other communication channels;
  • Perform a variety of related administrative activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Good knowledge of modern principles, practices and techniques of law enforcement; good knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedures Law and other applicable laws, regulations and ordinances; good knowledge of the principles and practices of criminal investigations; good knowledge of the local geography; good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision; good knowledge of the operation of radio equipment; skill in the use of firearms; skill in the use of special equipment including police radar and breathalyzers; skill in the operation of a patrol car; skill in the operation of personal and/or laptop computers; ability to apply first aid; ability to deal firmly yet courteously with the public; ability to follow and communicate written and oral directions; good powers of observation; sound judgment; integrity; tact.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

At least three (3) years full time permanent employment as a Deputy Sheriff (subsequent to successful completion of probationary term for Deputy Sheriff) with Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Completion of Municipal Police Training Council's course in Police Supervision within an acceptable timeframe after appointment.
  2. Possession of an appropriate New York State driver's license at time of appointment.
