TREE MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is a skilled position involving the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of complex equipment used in the removal, pruning and care of trees.  Employees in this class are responsible for maintenance of their equipment.  General super vision is received from the Supervising Crew Chief as to tasks to be performed, permitting leeway in planning the details for each work assignment.  Supervision is exercised over the work of laborers and helpers.  Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:           (Illustrative only)

  • Operates an articulating‑boom aerial device (bucket truck);
  • Operates chain saws, hydraulic tools, and pruning shears;
  • Operates a wood chipper in the chipping of brush and tree limbs;
  • Performs daily inspections of equipment and performs minor repairs and maintenance work on tree removal equipment (chipper, chain saws, aerial boom, etc.);
  • Climbs trees with the use of spurs and ropes, in order to trim, prune and top out trees;
  • Maintains records of time, materials, equipment and work performed;
  • May supervise a small group of laborers in connection with specific projects;
  • Participates in ice control and snow removal activities;
  • Participates in other routine public works activities as needed;
  • May be required to operate spraying device for tree/brush control;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Good knowledge of the practices, tools, equipment and safety precautions used in topping, pruning and the removal of trees; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; ability to maintain simple records; dependability; willingness to respond to emergencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four (4) years of experience in tree work which shall have included at least one (1) year in the use of spurs and ropes in the climbing of trees, and one (1) year of experience in the operation of an articulating‑boom aerial device (bucket truck).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. At the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position, possession of a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) (with endorsement if required) is mandatory.
  2. Eligibility to obtain the required New York State Department of Conservation sprayers license after appointment.
