SET-UP MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSThis is a semi-skilled position involving a variety of the standard trades. The main function of this position involves setting up, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of machines and/or mechanical equipment related to the areas of air conditioning, plumbing, heating, and electrics. Work is performed under general supervision of the Park Superintendent. Direct supervision may also be received from higher level trades specialists (i.e., Master Mechanics) with leeway allowed for independent judgment. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Sets up heating, equipment including disassembly of heaters, pumps, etc. for analysis by Master Mechanic;
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots minor problems with equipment, identifying problems and recommends implementation methods, procedures and techniques for resolution;
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove or repair defective parts;
  • Examines used parts to detect imperfections;
  • Fabricates parts and equipment when needed to repair machinery;
  • Installs parts and equipment to facilitate smooth operation of equipment or machines;
  • Starts equipment to test their performance;
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics of a variety of machines and equipment;
  • Performs routine scheduled preventative maintenance and assists in making minor repairs to HVAC systems including their associated controls (i.e., thermostats);
  • Repairs water heaters and boilers which may require welding;
  • Repairs door closers and related hardware;
  • Lubricates and changes belts on mechanical equipment including but not limited to generators, small motors, pumps, etc.;
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to plumbing equipment such as pipes, valves, faucets, fixtures, and drainage systems;
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs various types of electrical equipment, including the replacement of switches, outlets, wiring fixtures, circuit breakers;
  • Replaces bearings and repairs shafts in motors, fans & pumps;
  • Rebuilds pumps and compressors;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Good knowledge of equipment operation, set-up and maintenance practices; good knowledge of tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing, electrical, heating, carpentry and air conditioning trades; knowledge of the standard operating procedures for equipment operations including safety rules and regulations; ability to read blueprints and follow written specifications and sketches; ability to fabricate, repair, and modify equipment parts; ability to weld; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; initiative in successfully completing assigned work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:         

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma, and six (6) years experience in setting up, troubleshooting, repairing and mechanical maintenance of equipment which involved the standard trades (plumbing, electrical, and carpentry).

SUBSTITUTION NOTE:  Additional technical school training beyond the high school level can be substituted for meeting the experience requirement above.
