SCHOOL LABORATORY AIDE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, this position assists science teachers in the performance of basic maintenance tasks in school science laboratories. Duties include preparing, dispensing, and cleaning laboratory equipment and supplies, as well as setting up and breaking down equipment. Incumbent of this position may be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and supply inventory, receipt of orders, and organization of supplies. The position requires an aptitude for the sciences. A nominal amount of clerical work is a part of this position. Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Assists in setting up laboratory equipment for science class;
  • Helps teacher with classroom set up by distributing and/or gathering materials;
  • Assists students in usage of science materials, tools and laboratory equipment;
  • Assists in implementation of laboratory safety procedures;
  • Assists teacher in preparation of charts, posters, bulletin boards, and science exhibits;
  • Receives orders and checks order against invoice;
  • Maintains inventory of non-consumable science materials;
  • Coordinates disposal and/or return of non-consumable science materials;
  • Keeps laboratory equipment clean and in good working order;
  • Maintains cleanliness of laboratory rooms and storage areas;
  • Maintains simple student records;
  • Performs read alouds;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of science field; ability to learn science curriculum; ability to use science tools and equipment; ability to follow technical instructions; ability to establish good relationships with students, teachers and coworkers; ability to communicate effectively with both individuals and groups; ability to establish and maintain discipline; tact; courtesy; dependability; initiative and resourcefulness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:

In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.
