PARK MAINTENANCE HELPER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is work of a routine but varied nature which involves physical labor and helper functions in the performance of various types of maintenance work in connection with the upkeep of park grounds, park and recreations equipment, and parks and recreational facilities and/or buildings. Work may include interaction with the public. Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level maintenance worker or crew chief. Supervision is not a requirement of this position. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs basic groundskeeping tasks such as mowing lawns, pruning trees and shrubs, basic cultivation and care of flowers and other plants, keeping walks and paths clear, shoveling snow;
  • Cleans, maintains sanitary conditions, and replaces basic supplies such as paper towels and toilet tissue, for rest room buildings and park offices, including proper disposable of refuse and recyclables;
  • Performs basic facilities/buildings upkeep tasks such as rough painting work, and simple repairs;
  • Assists with basic recreational facilities upkeep tasks such as clearing ice for ice skating, caring for playing fields, etc.;
  • Assists the public and communicates and enforces park rules, as needed;
  • May load and unload material and equipment from trucks;
  • May assist with maintenance of camp facilities within park grounds;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Familiarity with grounds maintenance and repair practices; ability to follow simple oral and written directions; willingness to do routine manual work; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Possession of a current valid New York State Class D Motor Vehicle Driver’s license may be required.
  2. Access to transportation may be required to complete possible field work assignments in a timely and efficient manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR SEASONAL APPOINTMENT: Adequate experience in grounds, building and/or park maintenance activities, as determined by the Recreation Director or other Town authority.
