DEPUTY FIRE COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is important work involving responsibility for the smooth operation for the county's programs for fire training and mutual aid to cope with fires and other public emergencies requiring the services of firepersons.  The incumbent of this position receives general supervision from the Fire Coordinator.  Performs a variety of related duties as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only).

  • Assists with planning and directing the organization of mutual programs among the various fire departments within the county;
  • Establishes training requirements for county fire personnel;
  • Helps coordinate training program with New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control;
  • Helps maintain the county inventory of manpower, equipment, and materials;
  • Helps supervise the maintenance and operation of the County Fire radio system;
  • Processes radio and press releases as required.
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention methods; good knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations and of the aims and purposes of the state fire mobilization and mutual aid plan and of the fire service; good knowledge of the geography and political subdivisions of the county; working knowledge of the principles and operation of a two‑way radio system; ability to assist with the planning, supervision and coordination of a complexity of operations; ability to interpret the fire training and mutual aid plan; ability to speak in public; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have obtained the position of Fire Chief with a Fire Department in Putnam County and has successfully completed fire training courses related to the particular area of responsibility, as appropriate.
