ASSISTANT MAINTENANCE WELDER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving efficient performance of a variety of welding tasks, either while functioning as an assistant to, or under the supervision of, a journey level welder or mechanic of a higher classification. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Assists in welding bumpers, fenders, and motor and gear casings;
  • Assists in repairs of broken parts of trucks, cars, graders, mowers, etc.;
  • Assists in reinforcing weak spots in machinery and apparatus;
  • Assists in welding of gasoline tanks, platforms and machinery;
  • Assists in rebuilds and replacements of broken frames on equipment;
  • Assists in dismantling and reassembling equipment to be welded;
  • Assists by tempering and sharpening tool bits, picks and shovels;
  • May operate a motor vehicle with snow plow, sander and other attachments in the removal of snow and ice;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex construction equipment; ability to do brazing and welding with acetylene or electric equipment; ability to work from plans, specifications and oral instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and verifiable experience with operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding machines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, appropriate for the type of equipment to be operated.
  2. Access to transportation is required to perform field work responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner.
