Message from the Commissioner to
Food Service Professionals
Dear Culinary Professional,
Thank you for your interest in our
campaign to reduce the use of artificial trans fat in
foods served in Putnam County eateries. This
voluntary project, to be launched in 2008, will be
presented to the public as part of the “Live Healthy
Putnam” campaign.
Your participation in the campaign
will be brought to the attention of members of the
health conscious public who want to reduce their intake
of trans fats. Our plans are to provide the public
with an easy way to find eateries which will support
their health goals by:
-
Launching the artificial trans fat
free program in a media blitz campaign.
-
Identifying your location through
the Putnam County internet website. In
addition, we plan to provide a link from the Putnam
County website to your website.
-
Familiarizing the health conscious
about the “We Checked for You” window sticker.
The bright red check mark will easily identify your
eatery as a participant.
To qualify you will need to do
the following:
-
Eliminate the use of artificial
trans fat containing oils, margarines and butter
substitutes in the foods you prepare. You can
use monounsaturated or polyunsaturated (e.g., olive,
sunflower, soy bean or cottonseed) oils and “zero
artificial trans fat” labeled margarines or butter
substitutes.
-
Obtain verification of compliance
at the time of your routine inspections, and in
ongoing regular inspection.
Our staff has begun the qualification
process in 2008. Those eateries which qualify and
continue to meet the campaign’s intent will be promoted
for free. Again, thank you for working to improve
the health status of the public and voluntarily
participating in the “Live Healthy Putnam” campaign.
Sincerely,
Sherlita Amler, M.D., FAAP
