FDA Issues Alert About Lead Found in Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches

09 November 2023

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration, known as the FDA, has issued a public health alert advising parents and caregivers not to buy or feed certain brands of apple cinnamon fruit pouches to children because these products may contain high levels of lead. One brand WanaBana is sold locally at the Dollar Tree. If toddlers and young children have consumed these products, their parents or caregivers should contact their child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood test for lead.

The following three products are under investigation and being recalled from the market:

  • WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches (sold on Amazon and other online outlets and Dollar Tree)
  • Schnucks cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack (sold at Schnucks and Eatwell Markets grocery stores)
  • Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches (sold at Weis grocery stores)

These products have a long shelf life and consumers should check their homes and not use these products. WanaBana has issued a recall and customers can return their products to the store where it was purchased for a refund. Under no circumstances should any of these products be consumed until all investigations are completed.

Lead is toxic to humans and can affect people of any age or health status. Protecting children from lead exposure is especially important since they are more susceptible to lead poisoning, but exposure is usually difficult to see. A blood test is the best way to determine if exposure has occurred and at what level.

Short-term exposure to lead could result in the following symptoms: headache; abdominal pain/colic; vomiting; anemia. Longer term exposure could result in the following additional symptoms: irritability; lethargy; fatigue; muscle aches or muscle prickling/burning; constipation; difficulty concentrating/muscular weakness; tremor; weight loss.
